I used to get triggered by people who didn’t see the world’s suffering as I did. I thought they were living in a bubble and “part of the problem”. During my time as a social activist, I felt compelled to inform others about what was wrong with the world.…
My way wasn’t working and I became increasingly disillusioned with humanity.
In hindsight, I was part of a different problem. One of perpetuating suffering. By relentlessly holding onto the idea that suffering was the only reality.
By continuously holding the image of suffering up, others felt powerless under the weight of the world’s problems and it’s no wonder they didn’t know what to do.
Yet what was I really doing?
How much was I actually helping?
The answer - truthfully - was very little…
As I began to question my reality, I came across a quote which radically changed my perspective:
“There are three kinds of people in the world, those who are asleep, those who are stirring, and those who are awake.
If you try to wake up the sleeping person they will just mumble and go back to sleep. If you wake up the stirring person they will wake up just long enough to curse you and then go back to sleep.
Instead of trying to wake them up, if you come across someone who is asleep or stirring what you should do is, fluff their pillow, tuck them in, and kiss them on the forehead.
The important joy for those who are awake is to seek each other out, connect with others who are awake, talk, sing and celebrate together. This will create a groundswell of awareness.
As this groundswell increases and spreads out, it will awaken the stirring and will begin to stir those who are still sleeping.”
-Buckminster Fuller
Whilst words such as ‘awake’ and ‘asleep’ are less conducive, it struck a chord.
This led me to create projects and organisations that were built on the New - attracting those who were drawn to the New. I was less involved in the affairs of those who thought differently - trying to change their minds. More focused on supporting those who wanted to change, willing to change, ready for change.
My ideas also transformed my perception of reality. As an example, before this I saw Mother Earth in pain, crying because of humanity’s treatment of her.
As I began to connect with Mother Earth on deeper spiritual levels, as well as experiencing powerful plant medicine journeys in the Amazon - I felt something else completely. Not pain of trauma but overwhelming parental love…on a level far exceeding anything human.
I didn’t see her as something small that needed to be saved - yet rather something immense that was holding space for all of us, me, to grow - and move through our lessons. In other words - she could handle it. Just as human parents handle it for their children.
This doesn’t mean we ignore what is happening. This is often a very polarised knee-jerk reaction. It means we can create change - differently.
We see the world through the lens of how we see our Self.
Many of us are unwilling to truly meet our suffering. It feels scary. Yet this doesn’t mean it goes away. It projects onto the world.
Many of the issues we face in the world today are because most of humanity is looking at the world through themselves. Perhaps we can never truly see the world yet we can be aware of how integral our lens is.
If we can trust in something higher, in the path of each soul’s decisions prior to incarnation - whilst also helping where we are needed (more on that below), we begin to see a very different world. This means how we help changes.
We cannot help an impoverished child in an African village and solve the Middle East conflict at the same time.
Why do we mentally try to do this?
Compassion fatigue is real and incredibly draining. We cannot help every single soul on the planet, every single animal, the entire environment. However, if we each focus on where our soul asks us to, one small area, the entire planet could change.
I believe today a lot of the issues heart-centred people face are due to overstretching and an over-concern with everything.
The more I surrender to Trust and Faith, it hasn’t made me want to detach from the world - it has made me believe in the world - and humanity.
Here is a story and woman that has always inspired me. Julia Butterfly Hill “ascended Luna—a giant 1,500-year-old redwood tree near Stafford, California—in December 1997. She lived in Luna for 738 days, until finally descending in December 1999 when an agreement was made with Pacific Lumber Company that protected Luna and a 200-foot buffer zone surrounding the tree.” Read full story here
What I love most about Julia’s story isn’t her commitment to stay up there for nearly 2 years. It’s her commitment to that forest. Actually to that tree in particular. She valued it that much.
From my research, the most effective environmentalists are ones who focus on one area, perhaps one forest or one river to protect. Or one family of animals.
Saying this, we don’t all need to be environmentalists, humanitarians, healers or teachers. Many of these roles can be sensationalised.
Listen to this Inquiry (unlocked) where I delve into this deeper
If you have a family or garden or pet and focusing upon that makes your Soul happy, what can be more beautiful than that?
Perhaps you are sitting at a desk working for a company that makes you happy and the people around you make you happy, what is more beautiful than that?
We each get to decide the life we wish to lead and no one sits above us judging our life experience.
I trust in your life experience, your choices, your explorations, your decision-making ability - imagine how the Universe feels about you.
What do you trust in?

Such powerful writing, thank you, really appreciate this articulation.
I think I am already subscribed to your free version of Substack but as I read what came in my email box this morning, I clicked links and continue to see suggestions to subscribe. This is confusing to me. I enjoy reading what you write and look forward to listening to some of the auditory messages when I can be in a situation where the sound will not disturb anyone.
